QLD:Qld police catch Chinese national hiding in backyard

BRISBANE, Aug 12 AAP - Police found a Chinese national hiding in a Brisbane backyardthis morning after escaping the custody of corrective service officers when she was refusedentry to Australia, police said.

The 31-year-old woman was being held at a hotel by corrective service officers nearthe Brisbane Airport when she escaped on foot shortly after 10pm last night.

The escape sparked a police hunt involving six officers who combed the suburbs of Ascot,Hendra and Clayfield looking for the illegal immigrant.

Sergeant Gary Keating said the police search failed to find the woman but she was thenlocated by an Ascot resident this morning.

"At about 4.20am this morning a resident of Ascot contacted police to advise them thatthe wanted person was knocking on their back door," Sgt Keating said.

"Police attended that address and located the wanted person and returned her to theImmigration Department at the Brisbane International Airport."

Police said the woman was caught by immigration about 3pm yesterday and was due tobe flown home sometime today.

It is not yet known why the woman was refused entry to Australia.

A comment was being sought from the Department of Immigration.
