Fed: No crisis at detention centres, says PM

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has denied there's a crisis in Australia's detention centres-- despite another deliberately lit fire causing major damage at Woomera.

The government says the orchestrated campaign by asylum seekers has left a damage billof about $8 million in three days.

The Immigration Department says detainees at the Woomera centre in outback South Australiaused stones and metal bars to attack guards trying to extinguish the overnight fires.

The blaze destroyed 33 accommodation blocks, eight ablution blocks and two dining rooms.

It followed similar deliberately-lit fires at South Australia's Baxter facility andthe Port Hedland centre in Western Australia.

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER says the destruction has been counter-productive,because it's hardened the attitude of Australians towards asylum seekers.

And Mr HOWARD's told ABC radio there isn't a crisis in the centres and the fires won'talter the government's policy.
